BioHygiene Laboratories is
staffed with professional microbiologists and mycologists who have
their baccalaureate and advanced degrees in environmental microbiology
or related science. Our staff has well over 15 years of experience
analyzing air, surface, raw materials, soil, water, and other environmental
samples for bacteria and fungi. Each team member has extensive training
in direct microscopic examination of spore trap samples in order
to determine airborne fungal spore counts, pollen, dander and opaque
particulates. Our analysts have received training, in part, at the
McCrone Research Institute Indoor Air Quality Fungal Spore Identification
Program, which is one of the few programs in the United States that
offers hands-on spore identification. Our staff is also experienced
in evaluating fungal growth potentials on tape lift samples from
varying types of surfaces, as well as from bulk, swab and microvacuum
samples. We can determine viable bacteria or fungi counts from swab
or bulk samples; and we can confirm the presence or absence of selected
pathogenic bacteria, such as E. coli.

Our laboratory is
accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association
(www.aiha.org), in part, through successful
participation in the AIHA Environmental Microbiology Proficiency Analytical
Testing Program (EMPAT). The AIHA EMPAT program is a performance
based program that assesses viable culture and spore trap samples.
All laboratory
analyses are performed in accordance with recognized scientific
standards in order to consistently generate accurate and reproducible
results. Air samples are collected on agar plates are incubated
in temperature controlled incubators to promote microbial growth
allowing our trained analysts to identify fungi and bacteria
to the genus and species.
